Gorgeous Antique Bed and a fun antique dresser for sale!

This past month has been so incredibly busy. So happy to share some new “for sale” furniture with you! I have been busy working on many pieces for a non-profit store/boutique my aunt is opening up in Brentwood. I can’t wait to share with you the finished product and her gorgeous store once everything is set up! So there will be much more about that later, so stay tuned :)

As for today, I am sharing with you two different things I have done this past week. Recently, I thought to myself it had been awhile since I have done any beds. Lo and behold, I found a gorgeous antique full-sized detailed bed for sale. I painted it a dusty blue-gray with a little pearl on the surface, and a little off white on the detail. This will be a lovely piece for someone, even a guest room!frenchbed 1 copy

I also found a little antique dresser I liked the shape of, and decided to do something creative with it. Though the piece is painted in pure white, it features vintage sewing patterns along the fronts of the drawers, making it adorably unique! And by vintage, I mean really VINTAGE as they came from my husband’s grandmother’s basement. That lady has saved everything over the years! Sweet of her to let me use some of what she has kept :)

For more on these pieces, go to the “currently for sale” page. And as always, there is free delivery on furniture to the Nashville/ Franklin area, and cash or credit card is accepted.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend ! Here’s to a busy summer!

Cherry Blossom Dresser…and a little honesty

Once upon a time this week started off with beautiful intentions. I had plans to finish up some custom work, paint a sweet little dresser I have been looking forward to working on, as well as enjoy the season with a trip to the apple orchard with my husband and busy little guy, and maybe even start that sewing project, aka my one and a half year old’s Halloween costume.

All of this came to an abrupt halt, when early on in the week, this pregnant gal who gets hungry every couple of hours, went and grabbed some Chinese food around the corner. Now, I have never had food poisoning before, so this was all new territory for me. For hours upon hours I kept saying, why, oh why am I having this horrible morning sickness at 17 weeks pregnant?! This poor baby got all the blame! I thought, “oh great, this must be one of those pregnancies where I’m sick the whole time.” So, in my stubborn fashion I fought off the nausea all day, even trying to nibble food thinking it would settle my stomach. I will spare you the details, but once the baby went to bed, I spent the rest of the night in the bathroom. And the next day in bed. And the next day.

But alas, I am finally feeling much better, just feeling a little weak. I certainly do not wish food poisoning on anyone ever, especially pregnant! Somehow everything bad is much worse if you are also pregnant.  In all honesty I have really been fighting the urge to feel sorry for myself a lot lately. I ended up in the ER a couple of weeks ago needing to get stitches in my finger after slicing it on a can, and that made it hard to paint for a couple of weeks. That was also my first time having stitches, and the week before that, our son accidentally got a cookie with egg in it at Sunday school, and had hives for a week….and then there was the very long drawn out morning sickness, I could go on and on… so I have felt as if there has been some sort of storm cloud of bad luck following me around. But I have resolved myself to change my perspective. In fact in all of the cases, it really could have been worse. How lucky I am really that my husband didn’t also want Chinese for lunch the other day, because I really relied on him to take care of me and my son while I was sick.
Truly, truly I do live a blessed life. And I owe it to my God to be more grateful and less negative. So, even though something else might pop up this week, I am going to try to remember this. I WAS able to get to the little sweet dresser I mentioned. And as I sat and painted the little cherry blossoms on it last night, I thought to myself, that even though I wasn’t feeling 100% yet, how awesome it is that I have so much fun doing what I do, that I just couldn’t wait any longer to get to it. Do you have a job that doesn’t feel like work? If so, count yourself very blessed!
So, in all it’s sweetness, here is the Cherry Blossom Dresser. Painted a soft gray, with chippy paint, and accented with hand painted cherry blossoms. For more information on this piece, please go to the “Currently For Sale” Page.

Also, I may never eat Chinese food again. But I’m okay with that.

diy mickey mouse birthday!

I just got back from a weekend getaway to celebrate my birthday. It was a fun trip in a beautiful city, and I will blog about it very soon!

Also at the end of April, we celebrated my son’s 1st birthday (tear). Other than it being a very unusually chilly day, it was a blast! We celebrated with an abundance of mickey mouse, since that is his favorite. I love crafts, so I did a lot of diy mickey projects the past couple of months :)

These were the mickey mouse invites I made:

Mickey Mouse cookies n cream cupcakes on a hat box covered in scrapbook paper and ribbon. Also, round wood pieces bought from hobby lobby and painted with black chalk paint to make mini chalkboards! To see how to make your own chalk paint, read my blog post http://asouthernstory.com/2012/02/23/today-on-my-front-porch/

turquoise spray painted vases glued to painted trays for the cucake tiers

washed baby jars used for party favors!

Red distressed high chair for a birthday seat!

Other than all of the birthday festivities lately, I have gotten some a little furniture work done. I have been needing some new end tables in my living room, and when I saw these, they were the general shape I was looking for, BUT there was just one problem. they are U.G.L.Y.

Here is a “before” picture:

Not very chic, huh? What do you think? Is there any hope at all for them? Stay tuned, I will post the “after” picture very soon, and we will see if it was worth it. Have a great week!

French Chair Goodness and Future Giveaway

Everybody loves a good before and after, right?
I SO often get so busy/ anxious/ excited to start on a piece, that I forget to take a before picture. it just messes with my mojo. It takes long enough to get together all the supplies I’m going to use, that stopping to find the camera just isn’t something I want to do. But when I am done, do I regret it? Most of the time!
Well, today you get one. pretty chair, huh? Not everything I paint starts out ugly, haha. It had beautiful lines and detail (the first thing I look for). It just needed a little updating.
I started with a robins egg blue, then did some antiquing (my, that took forever with all its details!) and a touch of glaze to give it a pearlescent look in the right light. What do you think? I will add this chair to the “currently for sale” page.

I also finished a HUGE shabby chic mirror. gorgeous details. it would look amazing in a shabby chic dining room, but would also look great in a bedroom, living room, or nursery. hand painted in a very soft “antique” white, and sealed to last. be sure to check the “currently for sale” page if you are interested in buying.

And lastly, on to the giveaway information :) Since i am a new blog, and wanting to grow, I have decided to do a giveaway. Everyone loves to win something free! Once i get to 100 followers ( just go to the home page, and look on the right, enter your email and you will get updates when I have a new post) i will be awarding a random follower (via number jumbler). Make sure to sign up to receive notification of my post, as I will be reminding everyone about it, and giving the rules on how to enter once it gets closer. Here is what one lucky follower will win:

A hand painted, hand antiqued by me, shabby chic chalkboard. here are just some of the things you can do with this beauty:

The sky is the limit really! these are the latest craze. I have even seen these used by the little ring bearer in weddings with the words “here comes the bride.” You may even think of more ways to use it!
So…. remember to stay tuned to hear about winning this. Also, to help me get to 100 followers even sooner, you can “share” my blog with friends via pinterest, and facebook. at the end of this post, you will see button for either. so share, and help me grow!
Thanks everyone!

Trip to the Mall and a Springtime Dresser

Happy Friday all!
Sure, I work from home, and make my own hours, but who doesn’t love a friday? Yesterday, my husband and I took the baby to the grand re- opening of the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville. It has been closed for two years since the flood here in Nashville, and we couldn’t have been more excited to see it re-opening! If you don’t live in Nashville, and ever come to visit, make sure to add it to the list of things to visit, it is huge (though not as huge as the Opryland hotel, which is also amazing to walk around). The energy was so fun… you could really feel people’s excitement after two years of waiting.
Here is a quick picture (forgive my appearance, it was early, and we wanted to hurry up and get there and not miss out) that my husband took with his cell phone of us walking into the new “Forever 21″ store as they had just lifted the door:
This store is one of my favorite “girly” indulgences. They made it much bigger than it was before. It was HUGE. Just to give you a little idea, the size of the Forever 21 at the Mall of America in Minneapolis (definitely the biggest mall I have ever been to) is 32,000 sq. ft. Oh, I how I love that mall… no tax you know? I get to visit it every time I go with my husband to Minnesota to visit (he is from there). Anyway, getting back to my point…. .the new Forever 21 in the Opry Mills mall is 60,000 sq. ft.!!! What in the world!! I may or may not have lost my husband and son, while recklessly throwing caution to the wind to dash through isle after isle of beautiful new full racks.
That store took up a lot of my time, so we are going to have to make a trip back to see some of the others, like a new Disney store, and Lego store. I’m sure with the little boy in my life there will be many future visits there…. They had artists performing (it is Nashville) and there were some fun free promotions going on too! We got the cutest ever free teddy bear from Vanity Fair. And we got a free bag for frozen items from grabbing some frozen yogurt at Sweet CeCe’s. Mmmmm, just love that place. If you have not checked them out yet, you MUST this season:
I like the cake batter and raspberry flavors myself.
I will show you my freebies just for fun :)
With all the fun yesterday, I did happen to upload some new pretty furniture on the “Currently for Sale” page, so go check them out! One featuring a pretty little grey springtime bird on a very chippy white dresser.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

my coffee table reveal and a little something sweet

hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
the weather in nashville was beautiful. we adventured to the zoo on friday with our 11 month old for his first visit there. he couldn’t always see the animals up in trees or far back, but he was wide-eyed at the ones he could see. we enjoyed it so much we bought a yearly membership. this stage in life is full of fun memories, i’m trying to soak it all up :)
so, as i have said before, with all the furniture i do, it feels like i rarely am working on stuff of my own. i showed you all my coffee table last week (here is a picture to refresh your memory).
…. and truly i actually liked it the way it was already! however, our leather couches are dark, and it was all too much dark heavy decor for my taste, so i needed to add a little “shabby.” also the top had some water damage that created a raised spot. so i had to get creative with that.
a little chalk paint, and decoupage later…
Here is how it turned out:
what do you think?
also, i finished a sweet little antique chest of drawers. i will put this on the “currently for sale” page for anyone interested in purchasing it. a soft off white, with chippy distressing, and a subtle detail of metallic glaze stripes along the front. this would be precious in a nursery! but could go in any room. perfect size for even some linen/ towel storage in a bathroom maybe?

and just because…. here is a little picture of the springtime blooming in my yard:
here’s to another week!

a little weekend wrap up

Hope you all had a great weekend! After getting over a cold (my husband and the baby included) and seeing such nice weather, I couldn’t help but feel the need for a good spring cleaning. And by spring cleaning, I mean complete OCD, sweeping, vacuuming, then using two different kinds of mops kind of cleaning. Plus some organizing…. that is a lovely feeling. And I went through a bunch of clothes to set aside for a “clothes swap party” this upcoming week. Have you heard of these? This is my first one, I am so excited! All the guests bring clothes they are sick of, and you basically shop each others things, with the leftover being donated. I can’t wait!

Otherwise, I finished this antique table/desk, and will add it to the “currently for sale” page.

Also, this is my coffee table, I have been meaning to do (yes my own stuff gets put on the back burner until I finally get around to it). Here is the BEFORE picture….. stay tuned, and later in the week I will show you what I did with it!

Happy Spring!

Okay, okay, so it’s not spring YET. But the forecast in Nashville today says it’s supposed to hit 80 degrees, so call it what you want, but it certainly isn’t winter :)

In leu of the spring time weather, I made this wreath for the front door this morning while sipping my coffee. And by “made” I mean embellished. I was too lazy (hence the coffee) to even use glue, just stuck the stems in deep. These wreaths can be found at Walmart and hobby lobby.

Have a great Tuesday everyone!

“Pin-spiration” and a Heads Up

This week my inspiration from pinterest was this pray board. I love it! The originator of this creation along with the tutorial can be found here.

I had fun making my version of this. Remember that roll top desk I said I decided wasn’t worth refinishing? The same one I used a drawer from to make this? Well, I pulled the top of it off, and used it to make this board. After some mod podge, and hot glue, I think it turned out pretty cute!

I plan to write new prayers on the cards each week. If I could go back and change one thing, it might be to have tried fitting 6 prayer cards on there instead of the 5, so that my husband and I could have 3 each.

Also, I am thinking of using the backs of the cards to elaborate if need be. If the front says “wisdom,” I might use the back to go into detail explaining what I am asking wisdom from God for that week. Others might not need elaboration though, such as “dad’s health.” I really can’t wait to use this! I think it will make me more mindful of remembering important prayers having a visual aid.

~ HEADS UP ~

I will be posting a gorgeous vintage waterfall style painted dresser and chest of drawers for sale in a couple of days so STAY TUNED!

Let sleeping dogs lie (a post for your puppy)

We have a dog named Sophie. She used to be spoiled. Then we had a baby…..

This post is dedicated to her :)

So, our yorkie used to sleep in bed with us, go on road trips with us, get lots of baths, yeah, she had the life. But don’t feel too bad for her, she still has it made sleeping around all day, getting her organic food and she’s still quick enough to outrun the baby in his walker (for now) . And after all, if she had been totally forgotten about, I wouldn’t be writing this ;)

We have always had a dog “bed” for her. It’s a cushiony thing I think I got at TJ Maxx years ago. The problem with it is, even though it is a little rubbery on the bottom, it moves all around on the floor, and I end up tripping on it, since it is near my side of the bed. So, if you have the same problem, or just think this is cute, here is the tutorial on your very own “desk drawer dog bed” :

pretty dog gone cute! :)
